Hydrolases as versatile enzymes for a greener catalysis

Hydrolases are enzymes that use water to break chemical bonds such as esters or peptide bonds. They are widespread in nature as they are necessary for the basic reaction allowing life to exist, but they have started to be widely used for synthetic purposes, too, in several industries. In this talk, I will showcase two types of hydrolases and speak about their engineering or discovery and their application. The first is a lipase, which hydrolyses the ester bonds in fatty acid esters and that we have engineered with the goal of using it for the enrichment of fatty acids of a specific chain length, starting from sustainable resources. We will then speak about urethanases their potential use as polyurethane degraders, the difficulty faced in discovering these enzymes and our current research on the topic.
