“ Looking for alternatives to antibiotics: The enormous potential of bacteriocins and bacterial lipopeptides ”
The increase and spread of antibiotic resistance have become a major challenge in the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. Faced with this critical public health problem, the development of innovative antimicrobials has become a global priority. In this context, our team is particularly interested in antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria such as bacteriocins and lipopeptides. In addition to their strong inhibitory activity, these peptides show a wide range of spectrum of action and act via original modes of action that are different from clinically used antibiotics. Despite their enormous potential in the food, veterinary and pharmaceutical sectors, the study and use of these peptides is often limited by the difficulties associated with their production and/or poor pharmacokinetics profiles. By combining different synthetic strategies and peptidomimetic approaches, our team has successfully prepared several bacteriocins and lipopeptides. Access to these peptides allowed us to prepare analogues and perform structure-activity studies to evaluate their antimicrobial activity spectra and improve their pharmacological properties. Our promising results on the bacteriocin pediocin PA-1 and lipopeptide brevibacillin will be presented.
