Guidelines for the PROTEO Blogging Competition

The objectives of the PROTEO blogging competition are as follows:

• To give participants the opportunity to improve their popularization skills, so that they can talk about science to a non-specialist audience (in this case, in written form);
• Give visibility to the participants and their field of research, since the blog posts will be featured on the PROTEO website in a dedicated section;
• Give PROTEO members the opportunity to share their field of research with the general public in an appropriate format.

Competition and Application Deadlines

The deadline for submission of applications is April 21, 2025 at 5:00 pm
Results will be announced in May 2025.

Eligibility

• Scholarships are reserved for students under the official supervision of regular members, for projects in line with PROTEO’s scientific objectives and themes. It is not necessary to write the blog on the student’s specific research as long as the subject is related to the PROTEO themes.

Evaluation of blog posts

• Submissions are evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • Blog appeal and engagement through story telling: The ability to engage with the audience so that they feel they have been entertained by reading but have also learned something.
  • Communication skills for a non-specialized audience (popularization): The ability to write in a simplified and appropriate way about a scientific subject without diminishing its content.
  • Scientific accuracy: Even if the content is popularized, the article must retain its scientific accuracy.
  • Format: The format in which the blog is presented, the clarity of the language used, including grammar and sentence construction.

Winners’ prize

Winning blog posts by PROTEO members will win a monetary prize: $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. All articles will be shared on our PROTEO blog. In addition, the winning blog posts will be highlighted at the annual PROTEO symposium on May 22 and 23, 2025!

• To apply, please fill in the application form, using Arial font, size 11, and send it electronically to proteo@uqam.ca. The file must be named as follows: Firstname-Lastname-Blog2025

Blogging training:

We invite you to a  tutorial (In English) hosted by Dr. Daniela Quaglia on Tuesday, March 25 at 12:00 pm online. She will share practical tips for writing blog posts.
